Obama Goes To Washington–Within days of the election, foodservice industry pundits began to speculate on what the president-elect’s first 100-plus days might look like, and they generally agreed that he would certainly have his hands full with the NEWLY DECLARED RECESSION At the same time, they worried that his middle-class rescue plan, a centerpiece of his campaign platform, could encompass such business-unfriendly measures as union card check, a minimum-wage hike, paid sick leave and a national health care program with employer mandates. Meanwhile, few expect that federal immigration reform, a complex and highly sensitive measure supported by many in the foodservice industry, will come up on the docket soon. But given the uncertain state of the economy, it was anybody’s guess what might happen next.

The past year was a political wonk’s idea of heaven as the 2008 NATIONAL ELECTION CAMPAIGNS seemed to stretch on forever? Once the mud had settled, however, the world soon found that President-elect Barack Obama and the Democratic Party had won pretty handily, with the majority of the nation responding favorably to their message for change in the face of a global economic meltdown.

For the eighth consecutive year 10 of this country’s finest restaurants have been chosen for induction into the Fine Dining hall of Fame by Nation’s Restaurant News editors and previous Hall of Fame inductees. This year’s award winners as well as the 70 past recipients will be honored at a Champagne luncheon in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago on May 17. The Fine Dining Hall of Fame awards are presented to the owner or owners of each restaurant for exemplifying the highest standards in food preparation, service, consistency of operation, employee training and motivation, and for enhancing the fine-dining experience in general.

WIRELESS TERMINALS permitting guests to swipe their own payment cards at the table or curbside, for security or convenience reasons, were introduced at more restaurants, including some locations of the Claim Jumper chain. Irvine, Calif..-based Claim Jumper reportedly planned to add the devices for curbside business at all 45 units by year’s end.

New labeling law likely to be signed

The House of Representatives is expected to pass a bill next week that will require food manufacturers to clearly list whether products contain any of eight of the most common foods consumers suffer allergies to by the beginning of 2006. The eight food products set to be listed on all foods comprise nearly 90% of food allergies.

N.J. to vote on bill calling for nut warnings at restaurants

The New Jersey legislature is considering a bill that would require restaurants to post signs warning that peanut or tree nut products may be in food. Passed by the Senate and awaiting Assembly action, the bill would levy a maximum $250 fine on restaurants that failed to post the signs. The New Jersey Restaurant Association says the effort is better spent on education.

Study: Milk has cancer-reducing effects

Study participants who drank two 8-ounce glasses of milk a day showed a 15% reduction in colorectal cancer, according to findings in today’s Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study also indicated that taking 900 mg of dairy supplements a day produced similar results.

Man arrested in phone strip-search scam

Florida police have arrested a man they believe called restaurants and attempted to make managers strip-search employees to look for stolen goods. The 38-year-old corrections officer will face felony charges in connection to an incident at a Kentucky

Bottled water remains fastest-growing major drink segment

Per capita consumption of bottled water increased last year to 22.6 gallons, up from 21.2 gallons in 2002. Bottled water now ranks as the second-largest commercial beverage segment in the U.S. (behind carbonated soft drinks) with annual growth of 9.1% between 1998 and 2003.
